According to the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, convincing someone to agree with your point of view is known as persuasion. He quoted ethos, pathos and logos as the three basic tools of persuasion. 1. Ethos – They are speakers who can convince the audience by showing that they are credible, reliable, trustworthy and sincere. Here, the speakers show their experience and the academic knowledge they possess in a particular field. For example, when we fall sick, we tend to go to a doctor rather than going to a carpenter. 2. Pathos – They are speakers who can convince the audience by creating an emotional bond. They understand the emotions of the audience and follow the vibes of the same to connect better. For example, before the election, politicians, doing their canvassing, connect with and make people vote for them. 3. Logos – They are speakers who use more facts, statistics, information or other evidence to win people. They use logic to make their argument more convincing. For example, imagine why an advertisement for soap would talk about killing 7,000,000 bacteria which might exist in our hands. Here, they add facts with some numbers and make people buy their products. To persuade their audience, most of the speakers form a combination of ethos, pathos and logos. Whenever you listen to a speech, watch an advertisement, or listen to someone, you are convinced by basic tools of persuasion.
